Japan is renown for its traditional three-pillars of HR management. The popular edict suggests\nfirms have moved away from traditional and shifted towards more transparent Western-style. However,\nexisting research has focussed on formal HR policy rather than actual practice and there is inconsistent\nevidence as to the degree Japan has made the transition. This paper reviews ten company cases by\ninterview at varying organizational levels. The research classified companies interviewed into three\nHR typologies: Those that were; 1) Western-style , with jobs clearly defined, transparent performance\nmanagement, and generally strong foreign investment or international exposure. Conversely, there\nwas the, 2) Traditionalist-style which exhibits a strong membership generalist employment system.\nAlternatively, the research defined a middle ground being a, 3) hybrid-style where both membership\ngeneralists and job-type specialist systems coexist. The research found that this hybrid-style has a\nDual-track HR system. This means traditional Japanese generalist HR practices are preserved, whilst\nin parallel, a Western-styled job specialization is found. This is happening whilst Japanese working\npopulation is shrinking and there is growing competition for the available young school leaver recruits\nwhose employment expectations are rising. Further, there is increasing foreign business investment and\ninternational engagement which is creating labour market demands and exposure of Japanese traditional\nfirms, and their employees, to Western-style firms. Notably, young recruits, and especially women, seem\nincreasingly attracted to Western-style job specialist type firms. The findings are useful to policy makers,\npractitioners and foreign investors in understanding and contemplating HR trends.","subitem_description_type":"Abstract"}]},"item_10002_publisher_8":{"attribute_name":"出版者","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_publisher":"九州共立大学"}]},"item_10002_relation_12":{"attribute_name":"論文ID(NAID)","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_relation_type_id":{"subitem_relation_type_id_text":"40022547185","subitem_relation_type_select":"NAID"}}]},"item_10002_source_id_11":{"attribute_name":"書誌レコードID","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_source_identifier":"AA12533413","subitem_source_identifier_type":"NCID"}]},"item_10002_source_id_9":{"attribute_name":"ISSN","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_source_identifier":"2186-0483","subitem_source_identifier_type":"ISSN"}]},"item_creator":{"attribute_name":"著者","attribute_type":"creator","attribute_value_mlt":[{"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"LEE, Jihyang"}],"nameIdentifiers":[{"nameIdentifier":"1077","nameIdentifierScheme":"WEKO"}]},{"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"DRUMMOND, Damon"}],"nameIdentifiers":[{"nameIdentifier":"1078","nameIdentifierScheme":"WEKO"}]},{"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"HEMPEL, Paul"}],"nameIdentifiers":[{"nameIdentifier":"1079","nameIdentifierScheme":"WEKO"}]}]},"item_files":{"attribute_name":"ファイル情報","attribute_type":"file","attribute_value_mlt":[{"accessrole":"open_date","date":[{"dateType":"Available","dateValue":"2021-05-20"}],"displaytype":"detail","filename":"kiyo11-2-2.pdf","filesize":[{"value":"1.7 MB"}],"format":"application/pdf","licensetype":"license_11","mimetype":"application/pdf","url":{"label":"kiyo11-2-2","url":"https://kyukyo.repo.nii.ac.jp/record/409/files/kiyo11-2-2.pdf"},"version_id":"e66c58cb-bc9c-4728-bd3e-d526acada36d"}]},"item_keyword":{"attribute_name":"キーワード","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_subject":"Japanese HR management","subitem_subject_language":"en","subitem_subject_scheme":"Other"},{"subitem_subject":"international exposure","subitem_subject_language":"en","subitem_subject_scheme":"Other"},{"subitem_subject":"hybrid dual track HR systems","subitem_subject_language":"en","subitem_subject_scheme":"Other"},{"subitem_subject":"talent recruitment market competition","subitem_subject_language":"en","subitem_subject_scheme":"Other"}]},"item_language":{"attribute_name":"言語","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_language":"jpn"}]},"item_resource_type":{"attribute_name":"資源タイプ","attribute_value_mlt":[{"resourcetype":"departmental bulletin paper","resourceuri":"http://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_6501"}]},"item_title":"Exploratory Study of Japanese Human Resources Management : Traditional versus Western-style approaches","item_titles":{"attribute_name":"タイトル","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_title":"Exploratory Study of Japanese Human Resources Management : Traditional versus Western-style approaches"},{"subitem_title":"Exploratory Study of Japanese Human Resources Management : Traditional versus Western-style approaches","subitem_title_language":"en"}]},"item_type_id":"10002","owner":"10","path":["91"],"pubdate":{"attribute_name":"公開日","attribute_value":"2021-05-20"},"publish_date":"2021-05-20","publish_status":"0","recid":"409","relation_version_is_last":true,"title":["Exploratory Study of Japanese Human Resources Management : Traditional versus Western-style approaches"],"weko_creator_id":"10","weko_shared_id":-1},"updated":"2023-05-15T10:40:50.295131+00:00"}
