内容記述 Using data on efforts to address academic withdrawal and academic leaves of absence, which
were provided by the 37 universities participating in the 2011 Japan Student Counseling Conference,
we analyzed (1) rates of academic withdrawal and academic leaves of absence; (2) the status of both
current and planned measures related to academic withdrawal and academic leaves of absence; and
(3) issues to be addressed. Average rates of academic withdrawal, disenrollment, and academic leave
in participating schools were 2.0%, 2.0%, and 2.2%, respectively. Academic withdrawal rates tended to
be higher in smaller schools, while larger institutions tended to have higher rates of academic leave.
Existing approaches were dominated by methods that targeted individual students, such as programs
incorporating advising by faculty members, and systems for contacting students with multiple absences.
There were few instances where efforts to address academic leave and withdrawal were implemented
on a school-wide basis. Many universities have declared their intent to establish school-wide support
measures in the future. This may be an indication of the need to utilize resources that already exist at
various levels and locations within the institution, and, through linkages and collaboration, develop an
integrated network of support. However, creation of school-wide systems of support proves troublesome,
and it is probably necessary to present universities with relevant cases backed by concrete data.
Additionally, although it is known that a high proportion of students who have taken academic leaves
of absence, or who have been held back a year, eventually withdraw from school, few universities have
school re-entrance support programs. Thus future considerations include educational support at the
point of school entry, and support for students returning to school after an extended absence.
